Izzy by Tequila Social restaurant access point on Katy Trail in Dallas

One of our favorite places to spend time (and get exercise!) is on the Katy Trail. Mature trees make this 3.5-mile corridor an escape from the surrounding city. The current of joggers, bikers, and walkers carries visitors along in its infectious, communal energy. Pet waste bags are situated along the trail, as are drinking fountains with dog bowls.

The trail owes its existence to a partnership formed in 1997 between Friends of the Katy Trail and the City of Dallas. Its thoughtful landscaping, soft-surface running path, and occasional art installations are generously funded by individual donors, community partners, and the Annual Katy 5K.

Discrete access points are located every 1/4 mile, so consult a map. Several restaurants back up to the trail, making them great stop-off or starting points. Following the trail from the south trailhead on Houston Street north to Airline Road is a great way to experience Victory Park, Harwood, Turtle Creek, Uptown, Knox-Henderson, and Highland Park.

Shaded sitting areas along the trail invite walkers to stop, rest and reflect.

Several open-air dining establishments, including Tequila Social, Katy Trail Ice House, and Local Tap & Table, are located along the trail and offer pet-friendly patios.

The UT Southwestern Fitness Center is located at the south end of the trail.

Difficult to miss along the Katy Trail, this restored railcar commemorates the formation of our country’s transcontinental rail network, initiated by the Pacific Railway Act of 1862. One of the country’s first railroad companies, the Missouri Kansas & Texas Railway Company (MK&T) underwent a series of corporate restructurings and later was purchased by Union Pacific Corporation in 1986.

There are multiple, discreet access points to the Katy Trail.
